Gregg Jarrett Tells Why ‘Schiff Had To Have Known’ About Alleged Mortgage Fraud

Gregg Jarrett said on Fox Business Wednesday that Democratic California Sen. Adam Schiff “had to have known” about the illegal dual claims of his primary residences in California and Maryland.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham reported Tuesday that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland is investigating Schiff for alleged mortgage fraud after the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) referred his case to the DOJ for falsifying bank documents and property records. Jarrett made his remarks during an appearance on “The Evening Edit.”

“You’re entitled [to] only one principal domicile, and Schiff had to have known this because, first of all, he’s a lawyer. And second of all, he’s a lawmaker who creates the very laws which he allegedly violated,” Jarrett said. “So pleading ignorance is not going to work, and you know his spokesperson incriminated him a couple of years ago, admitting that his boss claimed both as primary residences, as if there’s nothing wrong with doing that. ”

Jarrett said Schiff could face a slew of criminal charges. Jarrett said that Schiff, if convicted, could be staring down up to 30 years behind bars.

“He needs a good criminal defense attorney right now because I think it’s very likely that he’d be charged with a whole host of crimes,” Jarrett said. “Bank and mortgage fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud, false statements to a financial institution and defrauding the government. And if convicted, he’s looking at 30 years behind bars.”

Jarrett elaborated on Schiff’s actions and said that the record shows that for nearly two decades, Schiff claimed his primary residence as Maryland, despite being a California elected official.

“The record showed that for the better part of two decades, he claimed his primary residence as Maryland and, remember, he’s a California elected official. But naming Maryland gave him more favorable loan terms and lower interest rates than a secondary mortgage, which is what Maryland should have been,” Jarrett said. “But simultaneously, as you point out, he claims his California home as primary. He takes a homeowners tax exemption on that. And look here’s what the law says. You cannot do both.”

Schiff and his wife allegedly misrepresented their Maryland property as their primary residence to secure a lower interest rate on a Fannie Mae-backed mortgage, as stated in the FHFA’s letter. They reportedly continued this false claim through several refinancing transactions between 2003 and 2019, even though Schiff served as a representative of California during that time. CNN first reported in November 2023 that Schiff had claimed both a Maryland home and a condo in Burbank as his primary residences.

“I think just about every member of Congress has a residence in their state and a residence back in D.C. since we’re in session much of the week and people make a family decision where they’re going to have their kids,” Schiff said in 2023. “And but our principal residence, our primary residence, is in California and always has been and always will be.”
