Former Heat Employee Charged For Selling $2 Million In Stolen Exotic Memorabilia

It was announced Tuesday by the Southern District of Florida U.S. Attorney’s office that an ex-security guard for the Miami Heat has been slapped with a charge for allegedly selling stolen game-worn jerseys and other exotic memorabilia worth around $2 million.

The 62-year-old Marcos Thomas Perez, who is originally from Miami, was knocked with a transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce charge. (RELATED: ‘Messed With My Immune System’: Bronny James Reveals That He’s Still Struggling After Suffering Cardiac Arrest)

A retired City of Miami Police Department veteran of 25 years, Perez worked as a Miami Heat security officer from 2016-21, and then from 2022-25, was employed as a security employee for the NBA, per a press release from the Department of Justice.

Perez was one of the few employees who was given access to a room that featured secured equipment such as hundreds of jerseys that were worn by players and other merchandise that was going to be displayed at a future museum for the Miami Heat.

It’s alleged that Perez went into the equipment room on several occasions and stole more than 400 game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia, ultimately selling them to multiple marketplaces on the internet, according to the press release.

Perez is accused of selling a Heat jersey that LeBron James wore in the NBA Finals for $100,000. The exact same jersey went on to sell for $3.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction.
