Tourist Tax Devolution Powers Expected at Labour Party Conference

The battle is not over between Reeves and Rayner when it comes to tax devolution. For those of you who were relying on the Treasury’s refusal two weeks ago…

Rayner, mayors, and local authorities have been pushing for devolved tax powers which would allow them to implement ‘tourist taxes’ in the first instance to add extra charges to hotel bills. The powers have so far been kept out of the Devolution Bill via resistance from Reeves and the Treasury who always prefer to control as many revenue-raising measures as possible. Rayner’s department tells hacks that there are “currently no plans to introduce a tourism tax in England” – a sly line that makes no reference to the devolution push…

Guido hears from government sources that the fight is far from over and Rayner expects there to be movement in her favour at Party Conference at the end of September. Conference is the event for which numerous major policies are currently slated on the Labour grid. The Treasury’s refusal is not final – expect tourist taxes to start springing up across the country…
