Healthcare Quango Staff Given “Carbon Literacy” Lessons During Working Hours

Care Quality Commission (CQC) civil servants are being offered three and a half hour long “carbon literacy” seminars during working hours, with the promise of a “carbon literacy certification” on offer for those who manage to sit through the whole thing. You get the certificate just for showing up. There is no test.

An internal memo outlines the benefits of the training:

“Carbon Literacy certification can help us all make a tangible difference. The workshops will help you:

• Understand the science and impacts of climate change, and recognise which actions have the biggest carbon savings.

• Find out how to independently outline and deliver at least two meaningful carbon-reduction actions, keeping you accountable long after the workshop ends.

[…]

• Demonstrate leadership and environmental credibility to other CQC colleagues and external stakeholders, reinforcing CQC’s reputation as a responsible, forward-thinking organisation committed to excellence.

• Join a growing community of carbon literate professionals both within and outside the CQC, expanding your network and sharing best practice across sectors.”

The supposed purpose of the CQC is to “ensure the quality and safety of care in hospitals, dentists, ambulances, and care homes“. Somehow staff also find the time for climate change lectures and ‘guided meditation sessions‘. Rest assured, next time you have a root canal you know the dental practice has been assessed by a carbon literate professional…
