President Donald Trump sharply criticized former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan after the onetime Republican officially joined the Democratic Party this week, as reported by Fox News.
Duncan, who served as Georgia’s lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023, was expelled from the state’s GOP earlier this year for endorsing Democratic candidates, including former President Joe Biden in 2024 and former Vice President Kamala Harris after Biden exited the race.

In an op-ed published Tuesday in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Duncan announced his party switch, writing that his move was the result of policy disagreements and his disapproval of Trump’s leadership.
Duncan claimed his shift began before Trump’s response to the 2020 presidential election and the events of Jan. 6, 2021.

“There’s no date on a calendar or line in the sand that points to the exact moment in time my political heart changed, but it has,” Duncan wrote. “My decision was centered around my daily struggle to love my neighbor, as a Republican.”
My journey to becoming a Democrat started well before Donald Trump tried to steal the 2020 election in Georgia.

Trump, responding early Friday on Truth Social, dismissed Duncan as ineffective and unwelcome in the GOP.
“Failed former Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan, of Georgia, is a total loser. Was never able to get anything done, all he ever did was complain,” Trump wrote.
“We didn’t want him in the Republican Party any longer, so I’m told he became a Democrat. Good riddance Geoff. You don’t even have a chance!!!”

The post follows previous remarks Trump made about Duncan. On Aug. 3, 2024, Trump referred to Duncan as a “bum” and “a total lightweight” while calling for his removal from the Georgia GOP.
Trump also criticized Duncan’s role as a CNN contributor, saying his “sole function is to knock Donald J. Trump.”
Duncan’s expulsion from the Georgia Republican Party in January included a directive from Georgia GOP Chair Josh McKoon that he stop using Republican credentials in public and media appearances.
Party leaders accused Duncan of using his former title to “attack the Republican Party” while working as a political commentator for CNN.
Duncan, who has been openly critical of Trump for several years, wrote that his decision to formally align with Democrats reflects a long-term change in his political beliefs, not a single incident.
The Georgia GOP’s action against Duncan came after his public endorsements of Democratic candidates during the 2024 election cycle, a move that state party leaders said directly violated party loyalty standards.
