Man killed in Baltimore shooting that wounded 5-year-old girl, four other adults

Baltimore police said a man died Sunday after being wounded the night before in a shooting spree near the Pimlico Race Course that also left a 5-year-old girl and four other adults injured.

Commissioner Richard Worley said the 38-year-old man, who was not identified, was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after shots rang out around 8:45 p.m. Saturday in the city’s Park Heights neighborhood.

Authorities said he died of his injuries around 10 a.m.

The 5-year-old girl was shot in the hand, the commissioner said, but “thankfully, it doesn’t appear that her injury is very serious.”

The remaining victims — three men between the ages of 32 and 52, and a 23-year-old woman — are all expected to survive.

Police have not shared any leads on a suspect or suspects.

Commissioner Worley suggested Saturday that the shooting was likely targeted, but at that time, the victims were still being treated for their injuries in area hospitals.

“We have very little information at this point,” the commissioner said. “All we know is there’s multiple rounds fired, multiple victims.”

The top cop said it’s unclear how the shooting erupted amid what seemed to be a casual neighborhood gathering.

“It just looked like some people were sitting outside on the porch and, up against a vehicle, having some crabs, to be honest,” Commissioner Worley said. “And it looks like somebody just opened fire.”

Baltimore had gone 16 days without a homicide until an earlier incident on Saturday, also a shooting, that left another 38-year-old man dead in the southwest part of the city.

Baltimore has seen 85 slayings so far this year, representing a 26% decrease from the same date last year.

Mayor Brandon Scott, a Democrat, said the homicide numbers are the lowest the city has seen in 50 years.
