Man Allegedly Cyberstalked Slain United Healthcare CEO’s Family, Said His Kids Should Be Killed

Officials charged 40-year-old Shane Daley, 40, of Galway, New York, with cyberstalking for allegedly sending menacing messages to a family member of slain UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Between Dec. 4 and Dec. 7, Daley called a family member of Thompson’s via a work phone starting hours after the murder, according to a press release citing a criminal complaint. He allegedly left harassing and threatening voicemails revealing satisfaction about the CEO’s death. He also said the family member and Thompson’s children deserved the same fate, court documents said.

Acting U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III issued a statement. “Brian Thompson was gunned down in midtown Manhattan. Daley, as alleged, gleefully welcomed this tragedy and did all that he could to increase the Thompson family’s pain and suffering. My office and its partners will now do all that we can to hold him accountable for this vicious and outrageous conduct,” he said.

Shane Daley faces up to five years in prison and a fine of as much as $250,000 if found guilty, according to a press release. He could receive up to three years supervised release. (RELATED: ‘Targeted And Precise’: Luigi Mangione’s Manifesto Reveals New Details)

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) continues to investigate. Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s New York Office Christopher G. Raia gave a statement. “The recurrent calls and messages in the days following Brian Thompson’s murder were more than callous and cold-hearted harassment – they were threatening and terrified a family already suffering following the violent death of their loved one, he alleged.

Luigi Mangione allegedly shot and killed Thompson on Dec. 4 in Manhattan. Surveillance footage caught a masked individual appearing to shoot the CEO as he showed up at a UnitedHealth Group investor conference, according to The Associated Press. Police apprehended Mangione five days later in Pennsylvania.
