A pro-life group is applauding Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s state probe into a northern Virginia county school district that allegedly funded minors’ abortions.
The governor announced Wednesday that Virginia state police were probing Fairfax County Public Schools after reports emerged that two girls had been pushed to have abortions by school staffers who paid for the procedures.
A pro-life group in Virginia says the school may have violated the state’s Parental Notification Law, which would require parental consent for a minor to obtain an abortion.
“This story has shocked many parents across Virginia in recent days and must be taken seriously. It is a critical step to help clarify how this may have happened and who is responsible! Thank you, Governor Youngkin,” said Olivia Gans Turner, president of Virginia Society for Human Life.
National pro-life organizations were also troubled by the news that a school could have used local, state and federal tax dollars to give minor female students access to abortion.
“We commend the brave whistleblower who documented raising concerns seven times, and we thank Gov. Youngkin for launching a criminal investigation, as FCPS clearly shouldn’t be allowed to investigate themselves,” said Caitlin Connors, political affairs director for Susan B. Anthony Pro Life America.
“These allegations are a parent’s worst nightmare. It’s horrifying that people who have been entrusted with educating children would push girls – one of whom was five months pregnant – to end the lives of their unborn children. These are girls who need support and protection – not silencing and cover-ups.”
According to the governor’s Wednesday press release, school administrators may have been aware of the abortion scheme involving school funds. Reports online suggest the school at issue is Centreville High School, located about 30 miles outside of Washington.
The Virginia Republican’s office directed anyone with knowledge of the allegations surrounding the abortions to contact the police.
“I am deeply concerned with the allegations that Fairfax County Public Schools officials arranged for minors to get abortions without parental consent and may have misused public funds to pay for them,” Mr. Youngkin said.
“I am directing the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to open a full criminal investigation into the matter immediately.”
A spokesperson from Fairfax County Public Schools told The Washington Times they’ll cooperate with the investigation.
“We are prepared to fully cooperate in the state police investigation into these 2021 allegations,” the statement read. “As this is an ongoing personnel matter, we are unable to comment further at this time. We remain focused on preparations for the start of the school year – with a focus on academic excellence and opportunity for each and every student in a safe and welcoming environment.”
Fox News reported that Zenaida Perez, a teacher at Centreville High School, tried to flag the abortion scandal seven times.
