Residents gather to heckle DC cops, yell at them to ‘get off our streets’

Protesters in Washington, D.C., were seen heckling and yelling at federal law enforcement officers as they tried to set up a vehicle checkpoint.

Video footage showed a group of protestors on Wednesday along a nightlife corridor near 14th Street NW shouting at police officers to “get off our streets!”

“Why are you here? You are trying to arrest innocent people? What’s your purpose? What’s your goal?” one protester could be heard yelling. “What’s the motive? Why won’t you show your face? Do you look at yourself in the mirror and think, ‘I did a good job today’?”

Signs declaring “Go home, fascists” and “Get off our streets” were also waved by demonstrators, according to the Associated Press, which reported that “Some protesters stood at the intersection before the checkpoint and urged drivers to turn away from it.”

“On Wednesday, agents from Homeland Security Investigations patrolled the popular U Street corridor. Drug Enforcement Administration officers were seen on the National Mall, while National Guard members were parked nearby. DEA agents also joined Metropolitan Police Department officers on patrol in the Navy Yard neighborhood, while FBI agents stood along the heavily trafficked Massachusetts Avenue,” the outlet reported.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, “on August 13, 2025, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the Metropolitan Police Department conducted a traffic safety compliance checkpoint in the 2100 block of 14th, Street, Northwest.”

“During the checkpoint, 344 vehicles passed through, 28 were stopped, 38 notices of infraction’s were issued, and MPD made one arrest for No Permit and Counterfeit Tags,” a spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “Since 2023, the Metropolitan Police Department has conducted weekly traffic safety compliance checkpoints. These checkpoints are an education and enforcement tool used to encourage safe driving and hold violators accountable.”

The checkpoint, where Homeland Security agents were also present, was reportedly shut down around 11 p.m., according to The Washington Post.

The head-scratching protests against making streets safer came days after President Donald Trump announced federal control over local law enforcement under section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. A reported 43 arrests were made Tuesday night as federal law enforcement and city police officers patrolled the streets.
