Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) said Wednesday that Democratic Party leaders are unwilling to challenge their party’s far-left wing, claiming they fear political backlash from its most radical members, as reported by The Independent Journal Review.
Speaking on Fox News’ “Hannity,” Kennedy named Democratic socialists Zohran Mamdani, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) as examples of far-left figures who have gained influence.

He said “mainstream” Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), have failed to publicly oppose them.

“The mainstream wing of the party is scared to death of the loon wing. They won’t speak up. And they don’t stand for anything anymore. All they stand for is against whatever President [Donald] Trump stands for,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy argued that Democratic leaders’ refusal to challenge their party’s radicals has led to them taking positions against public safety reforms in Washington, D.C., simply because President Trump supports such measures.

“That’s why we find ourselves in the extraordinary position of mainstream Democrats have now come out firmly and passionately in favor of crime in Washington, D.C., Why? Because Trump is trying to do something about it,” he said.
When Hannity asked if Schumer or Jeffries would ever stand up to the far-left, Kennedy replied, “No, but they could.”

He added, “Chuck and Hakeem need to go to Amazon, buy some testicles and stand up to the loon wing of their party … And until they’re willing to do that, I haven’t heard Senator Schumer say anything bad about Mamdani. I mean, the guy’s a socialist. He’s a whackjob. They’re scared to death. And the party is not going to get better until they do.”

Mamdani, a New York City mayoral candidate, has campaigned on policies such as free buses, city-run grocery stores, rent freezes, and “seizing the means of production.”
Former Democratic strategist Dan Turrentine also told Hannity on Aug. 6 that party leaders are avoiding conflict with the far-left for political survival.
“Chuck Schumer is terrified of being primaried by AOC … [Jeffries] wants to be speaker if we’re able to retake the House,” Turrentine said. “He needs the base … And so we have two leaders terrified of the base.”

On the same day, Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin told Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” that he supported having socialists in the party.
“We have lots of people in that tent from all of the different ideological wings, from conservative Democrats to centrists, to progressives, to these new leftists,” Martin said, describing the Democratic Party as a “big tent” coalition.
Polling reflects the far-left’s growing influence among Democrats. A CNN/SSRS poll released March 16 found that 10% of Democrats named Ocasio-Cortez as the leader who best represents their party’s core values, followed by Vice President Kamala Harris at 9% and Sanders at 8%.
A July 16 Quinnipiac University poll recorded congressional Democrats’ approval rating at 19%, the lowest in the polling organization’s history.
