The New York Times columnist and podcast host Ross Douthat hosted a guest who subconsciously revealed that the left has no answer for their hypocritical views on sex and children, and the beauty of human connection that drives so many younger generations to the right.
Noor Siddiqui, the founder of Orchid, a company that promises parents the ability to select their future children through genetic testing using In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), tells Douthat that she looks forward to a world where procreation no longer happens in the bedroom but instead in a sterile lab.
It seems that to the left sex is nothing more than a pleasure to be used for wild nights or a means to entertain and have fun with other humans. There has been enough discourse on the connection between the sexual revolution, birth control, and free love to know that this way of thinking has been mainstream for decades. Some of the most popular podcasts for women, such as Call Her Daddy, promote these ideas about sex in a flippant and glorified way to ignore that the most basic human connection has a more profound impact on society than just lust and climax.
During the episode, Douthat read Siddiqui a poem by American poet Galway Kinnell called, “After Making Love We Hear Footsteps.” The poem describes the moments after a husband and wife are intimate, which has woken up their child, who comes into their room. It beautifully illustrates the connection to sex and procreation that happens between husband and wife, and the constant reminder that without these moments, their child would not be there with them.
“…Fergus will only sink deeper
into his dreamless sleep, which goes by all in one flash,
but let there be that heavy breathing
or a stifled come-cry anywhere in the house
and he will wrench himself awake
and make for it on the run—as now, we lie together,
after making love, quiet, touching along the length of our bodies,
familiar touch of the long-married,
and he appears…”
After reading Siddiqui the poem, Douthat asks if she fears that, with her plan to turn making new life into a doctor’s visit rather than a shared connection between two lovers, there will be something lost in the fundamental relationship between sex and procreation. Siddiqui looks befuddled at first, just answering: “What do you mean?” (Sign up for Mary Rooke’s weekly newsletter here!)
In her defense, she does attempt to answer the question. Still, in typical leftist fashion, she claims that people who would choose to have children without IVF are exhibiting “genetic privilege.” Her answer is the tell that she is the one who is confused. What Douthat is asking her is whether or not she worries about the loss of the sexual relationship that leads to children, to which she responds that sex is for fun.

Unless you’ve had children, it’s hard to explain just how close you become through the sexual relationship you form with the person you love most in the world when both of you are hoping this act ends with a baby. It is the most intimate and important part of humanity that creates families and binds generations together. Without it, we lose a critical aspect of humanity that cannot be replaced with “fun sex” and sterile operations.
The left still seems utterly confused as to why there has been a rise in conservative young men and a resurgence of Americans searching for a more traditional life. But when the world feels so chaotic and off balance, it’s only natural for humans to seek familiar societal values that served their families well for centuries. We’ve lost our way. Siddiqui and others like her are aware of this. They are using our disoriented views on sex, morality, love, and marriage to push for a new society devoid of our humanity.
Maybe at the base of it all, this growth in tradition is humanity’s way of fighting for its survival. The younger generations are battling against the ever-increasing dystopian worldview that wants human connection to be severed and people to be nothing more than mindless animals looking for infinite ways to satisfy their lust without any deeper meaning behind their actions.
