Lyle Menendez Learns His Fate In Parole Hearing

The California parole board denied Lyle Menendez’s request for parole Friday, 36 years after he and his brother killed their parents.

His younger brother Erik,  who was convicted alongside him for the murder of their parents, was denied parole in a hearing Thursday. The brothers were resentenced in May from life in prison without the possibility of parole to 50 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Following the move, authorities have provided them with the opportunity to face the California Board of Parole.

Family members stood firmly in support of both Menendez brothers and issued pleas for their release in a public show of support.

Lyle’s case was considered on its own merits, and factors of rehabilitation were taken into account for each of the brothers. Lyle has had slightly fewer rule violations while behind bars, according to CNN.

Erik’s parole hearing continued for almost 10 hours as officials pressed him on his rehabilitation. The board heard arguments from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office opposing his release. Parole Commissioner Robert Barton cited alleged problematic behavior in prison as the “primary” factor contributing to the denial of his parole. (RELATED: Erik Menendez Denied Parole)

Erik Menendez will be able to bid for parole again in three years.
