San Bernardino County deputies arrested California parents on Friday for the alleged murder of their 7-month-old son, authorities said.
Jake and Rebecca Haro said their son Emmanuel was kidnapped from a Yucaipa parking lot in August. Sheriff Shannon Dicus, in a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s press release, said investigators determined the reported kidnapping never occurred. “The circumstances surrounding this investigation are tragic, and we will continue to search for Emmanuel,” Dicus said. “I trust our justice system will hold the parents accountable.”
The Haros told police on Aug. 14 that someone punched Rebecca while she changed Emmanuel’s diaper in a Big 5 Sporting Goods store parking lot. She said she woke up to find both her baby and the attacker gone. (RELATED: California Parents Report Their 7-Month-Old Baby Missing. Now They’re Not Cooperating, Police Say)
Investigators said they discovered inconsistencies in Rebecca Haro’s account as they reviewed security footage from the area. They reclassified the case from a kidnapping to a critical missing child investigation days into their search.
Deputies served a search warrant at the couple’s Cabazon home last week, removing a 2-year-old child who was placed in Riverside County protective services. According to Jake Haro’s attorney, investigators conducted an extensive search of the property, excavating areas of the yard and using police dogs, CBS News reported. The parents also gave detectives their cell phones with passwords and handed over their vehicle.

Jake Haro has a criminal history involving children. He pleaded guilty to willful child cruelty in 2023, the outlet reported. His ex-wife filed for a restraining order against him this week, seeking to stop his visitation rights with their oldest child.
Deputies said they believe no other suspects were involved in Emmanuel’s death. Despite extensive searches and following multiple tips, investigators said they have not located the infant’s body.
