Authorities in California have released new details in the case of 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro, whose parents are facing murder charges after initially reporting their child had been kidnapped outside a sporting goods store, as reported by The New York Post.
Court documents reviewed Tuesday revealed prosecutors believe Emmanuel may have been dead for up to nine days before his mother, 41-year-old Rebecca Haro, filed a false report of abduction on August 14 in Yucaipa.

Rebecca had claimed she was attacked by a stranger in the parking lot of a Big 5 Sporting Goods store while changing her son’s diaper in the family car.
Police launched a large-scale search for Emmanuel but quickly grew suspicious after identifying multiple inconsistencies in the couple’s accounts.

Both Rebecca and her husband, 32-year-old Jake Haro, stopped cooperating with investigators and hired an attorney as the investigation intensified.
“Based on the evidence, investigators determined a kidnapping in Yucaipa did not occur. It is believed Emmanuel is deceased, and the search to recover his remains is ongoing,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement on August 23.
Detectives seized Jake Haro’s car as evidence on August 19. Three days later, on August 22, authorities raided the couple’s home in Cabazon and arrested them on charges of murder with malice and filing a false police report.
Court documents also reveal Rebecca visited the same sporting goods store days before the alleged abduction and inquired about security cameras, telling staff her vehicle had been burglarized in the parking lot.
Two days after the arrests, Jake Haro, dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit, was seen with investigators searching for his son’s remains in an open field off a highway in Moreno Valley. The child has not yet been located.

During a hearing Tuesday, the couple appeared in Riverside County court without private counsel. Their previous attorney, Vincent Hughes, did not attend.
A public defender was assigned to represent both defendants until separate attorneys are appointed, with arraignment proceedings scheduled to continue September 4.
Rebecca has publicly maintained her innocence, telling the Southern California News Group, “I want to be out looking for my baby. … I will not give up. I will not give up on my baby.”

Jake Haro has a prior conviction for child cruelty in 2018, for which he served six months in prison, and he is currently on probation.
CPS allowed Jake to be in Emmanuel’s life after he beat his ten-week-old daughter. The judge gave him a 6-month sentence, but he only served one day!

If convicted of murder with malice, both parents could face life without parole or the death penalty.
Investigators also noted Rebecca Haro’s brother, James Beushausen, is serving a sentence of at least 50 years for the 2017 murder of his girlfriend, Jaylynn Amanda Keith, which he staged to appear as a suicide.
