A group of House Republicans is threatening to block legislation from advancing unless Congress passes a voter identification bill, with some lawmakers estimating that dozens of GOP members are prepared to withhold their votes.
The issue was discussed during a segment featuring Kayleigh McEnany, Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas, and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, who said the push for voter ID legislation has become a central political issue for House Republicans ahead of the upcoming election.
McEnany opened the discussion by asking about the size of the group of lawmakers willing to withhold votes on legislation.

“How big is this block of congressmen willing to not vote on other legislation? You only need a few to make a difference here,” McEnany said.
Gill responded that the number of Republicans prepared to take that position could be significant.
“You know, I would guess that right now there are probably 40 or 50 Republicans that are not going to vote for any piece of legislation from the Senate,” Gill said.
“That’s a large chunk of the Republican conference.”

Gill said the issue centers on voter ID legislation, which he described as a priority for Republican voters.
“And again, I think it’s because we realize, we recognize that this is the political issue of the day right now,” Gill said.
“This is what the American people want.”
Gill also argued that passing voter ID legislation could be crucial to Republicans maintaining their majority in the House.
“And by the way, this is going to be key to House Republicans keeping a majority in November,” Gill said.
Gill said lawmakers may face difficulty explaining the failure to pass such legislation if Republicans control both chambers of Congress.
“It’s going to be hard for us to go back to our voters in November and tell them, Listen, you gave us control the house, you gave us control the Senate, and we couldn’t get a common sense voter ID bill passed that both parties, at least from a voter standpoint, support,” Gill said.
“That’s going to be really difficult.”
