A group of academic freedom campaigners has written to Bridget Phillipson after a Middle East conference at London university SOAS demanded all academics acknowledge the “traditional owners of the land on which the institution to which they are affiliated is located, and/or, in the case of military occupation, acknowledge the status of the land under international law.” Israel is used as an example, obviously…

The policy, imposed by the BRISMES conference which is due to take place at SOAS next summer, also applies to “institutions established on land appropriated by a foreign occupying power, in contravention of international law, such as in Occupied Palestinian Territory.” SOAS claims it has no involvement in the policy…
A joint letter organised by the Committee for Academic Freedom, Alumni for Free Speech, the London Universities’ Council for Academic Freedom and Academics for Academic Freedom has gone to Phillipson, the university, and conference organisers. It alleges the law could be broken:
Section A1(3)(a) of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 specifies that the free speech requirement includes: “securing that the use of any premises of the provider is not denied to any individual on the basis of their ideas or opinions or in respect of their ability to put forward new ideas and controversial or unpopular opinions.” The sort of thing the Office for Students has powers to investigate, especially if encouraged to do so by the Education Secretary…
