President Donald Trump is scheduled to deliver the State of the Union address Tuesday night, but Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff of California announced he will not attend the speech, marking the first time he has skipped the annual address, as reported by Fox News.
In a video posted Saturday, Schiff criticized the president and said he would not be present for the event.
“He is ignoring court orders. He has weaponized the Justice Department to go after his enemies. He is letting loose ICE troops in our streets that are getting people killed,” Schiff said.

Schiff noted that he has historically attended major presidential events, including inaugurations and previous State of the Union addresses.
“I’ve never missed one. I have always gone both to inaugurations and to States of the Union. But we cannot treat this as normal. This is not business as usual. I will not give him the audience he craves for the lies that he tells,” Schiff said.
The California senator joined the U.S. Senate in late 2024 after serving in the House of Representatives since 2001.

In response to Schiff’s remarks, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson issued a statement to Fox News Digital criticizing congressional Democrats’ voting record.
“Every Democrat in Congress tried to pass a $4 trillion tax hike and voted against the working and middle class tax cuts the American people are seeing right now in their refunds. Democrats all voted against securing the border and deporting criminal illegals. Democrats all voted against modernizing our military. The list goes on. It’s not a surprise that they refuse to celebrate and honor the Americans who have benefited from the commonsense policies Republicans have governed with,” Jackson said.
Schiff indicated he plans to attend an alternative event instead of the president’s address. He said he will participate in the People’s State of the Union event being hosted by MeidasTouch and MoveOn.
According to reports, multiple Democratic lawmakers intend to skip the president’s address and attend the left-wing gathering.
President Trump’s address comes as he continues to outline his administration’s legislative priorities, including border security, tax policy, and military modernization.
The State of the Union is one of the president’s most prominent annual speeches to Congress, typically attended by members of both parties.
Schiff’s decision to sit out the address highlights ongoing partisan tensions on Capitol Hill. While boycotts of presidential addresses have occurred in the past, most lawmakers from both parties traditionally attend the speech.
The People’s State of the Union event, organized by MeidasTouch and MoveOn, is being positioned as an alternative forum for critics of the administration.
Tuesday night’s address is expected to draw national attention as President Trump outlines his agenda before a joint session of Congress.
