Adam Schiff Tries Blaming Trump for Food Prices, Gets Ratioed Online

As Americans prepared to celebrate the 249th birthday of the United States, Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) took to social media to criticize President Donald Trump’s trade policies, blaming them for rising costs at Independence Day cookouts.

Schiff claimed that tariffs implemented under the Trump administration were responsible for increasing prices on traditional holiday items.

“Going shopping for your 4th of July cookout today? Trump’s tariffs are making it a lot more expensive,” Schiff posted on X Thursday night.

Schiff’s comments were met with thousands of replies and reposts, many of which pushed back on the claims.

The post quickly began drawing scrutiny online, with users pointing out inconsistencies between his statement and recent economic data.

Furthermore, despite ongoing rhetoric from Democratic lawmakers about trade policy under President Trump, economic data shows strong performance tied to the tariff strategy.

According to reporting by CNBC earlier this week, $121 billion in revenue has been generated through the tariff system, while the U.S. stock market continues to hit record highs.

Schiff’s post also drew comparisons to a widely mocked tweet from the Biden-Harris White House in July 2021, when the administration promoted a $0.16 savings on cookout items as evidence of economic progress.

That post was later flagged by Community Notes for misleading information, as prices had already begun climbing sharply under the Biden administration’s economic policies.

Inflation during Joe Biden’s term led to the most expensive Fourth of July in U.S. history in 2023, with prices for food and fuel skyrocketing.

Critics noted that while Schiff is now focused on cookout prices under Trump, he and other Democratic lawmakers were largely silent during the sharpest period of inflation when Biden was in office.

As of this week, food prices are showing signs of leveling out. According to a new report by the American Farm Bureau Federation, many common items used in July 4th celebrations are stabilizing in price.

“As Americans head to the grocery store to stock up for their yearly Fourth of July celebrations, many will see their cookout bills finally starting to level out,” the Farm Bureau stated.

The report went on to explain that while some items, particularly meats, may remain volatile due to disease outbreaks and labor costs, supply chain improvements and easing input prices are helping to stabilize the market.

“After years of sharp food inflation, prices for many Fourth of July staples are finally beginning to level out,” the analysis concluded.

Schiff posted again Friday with a message referencing the actual meaning behind Independence Day, though the post also received hundreds of replies from users pushing back on his earlier comments.

Several commenters reminded the senator that the United States is a constitutional republic, not a direct democracy, a common correction made to posts from political figures discussing national governance.
