An Afghan refugee who supported the U.S. Special Forces and then later fled his country once it fell to the Taliban was allegedly killed in Texas over a parking spot.
Abdul Rahman Waziri was shot multiple times after checking his mail at his Houston apartment complex Sunday night, ABC13 reported Friday.
Another man was angry about where Waziri had parked and began vandalizing Waziri’s car, prompting an altercation, witnesses told the outlet. The man, who the outlet did not identify, allegedly shot Waziri as he was returning to his car, one witness told ABC 13.
A man at the scene purportedly took responsibility for the shooting and told police he had been arguing with Waziri, ABC13 reported. He was released after police spoke with the district attorney’s (DA) office, the outlet noted.
Waziri’s brother, Abdullah Khan, reacted to the incident, calling the alleged suspect’s release “unacceptable.”
“He came here to be safe, and here, when he came, this happened to him,” Khan told ABC13.
“We want the guy to be arrested, and he was walking in front of me,” he added. “That’s unacceptable.”
“Everybody was afraid that if the murderer is living amongst us, he killed somebody yesterday and he’s back here today,” Omer Yousafzai, an Afghan community leader, told the outlet. (RELATED: ‘He’s Going To Die’: Man Allegedly Stabs, Kills Teen Over Parking Space In Bronx)
The Houston Police Department confirmed they had responded to a report of the shooting via an online news release.
“Officers responded to a report of a shooting in progress in an apartment complex parking lot at the above address and found the male lying next to a white Toyota Camry,” the statement reads in part. “The male had been shot more than one time and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.”
The police department will continue investigating the incident, according to the same release.
Waziri, 31, was a husband and father of two young daughters, KPRC reported.
Waziri served alongside the U.S. Special Forces for seven years, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up in his name.
