Florida Division of Emergency Management Executive Director Kevin Guthrie addressed criticism Monday regarding the state’s new migrant detention facility, following a bipartisan tour of the site over the weekend.

During an appearance on Fox News’ Jesse Watters Primetime, Guthrie pushed back on claims made by several Democrat lawmakers who alleged overcrowding and unsanitary conditions.

The facility, unofficially dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” hosted a group of elected officials Saturday that included five members of Congress and approximately 20 state legislators.

The visit marked the first time lawmakers were granted access to inspect the site.

Following the tour, some Democrat participants, including Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, spoke to the media and described the facility as an “internment camp,” according to Politico.

When asked by Fox News host Jesse Watters whether any lawmakers attempted to “create controversy” by exaggerating their experience, Guthrie responded, “Absolutely. I think probably one of my favorites was an individual [who] had a thermometer, an infrared thermometer that they actually pointed at a light bulb, and it was 110 degrees. I knew it was 110 degrees. I said, ‘Let’s actually pull that down to where the ambient air is at and not point it at the light bulb.’”

The inspection and subsequent press coverage centered heavily on facility conditions, particularly restroom and sanitation standards.

During the segment, Watters played a video of the toilet and sink system, which Democrats claimed was unsanitary.

Guthrie explained that the setup is standard in secured facilities.

“Yeah. So the toilet system, you showed that already. This is a standard mock-up toilet system that is in any secured facility,” Guthrie said.

“Again, we meet and exceed either the national standard or the state of Florida standard, whatever is a higher level, we meet and or exceed that standard.”

He added, “This situation here, yes, there is a sink there. There is a toilet there, but as you indicated earlier, you do both of those things, whether you use a restroom or you brush your teeth, in a restroom, you know, also just eating food.”

Wasserman Schultz also raised concerns about the quality of food served to detainees, comparing it to what officials received during the visit.

She claimed that while government employees were offered “large pieces” of roast chicken and sausage, detainees were given “gray turkey and cheese sandwiches, an apple, and chips,” according to CNN.

Guthrie refuted the claim, saying, “That might be one of my favorites, Jesse, is number one, it was a ‘gray turkey sandwich.’ Well, she was about six feet away from that turkey sandwich box that was in a wrapper that I don’t know how she could tell it was gray. However, this is, think about it like this, Jesse, individuals that go to a hospital, individuals who go and get Michelle Obama’s lunches, are getting the exact same thing.”

He continued, “But then she turned around and asked as a part of that same question, if they want second portions, can they come and get it? So it’s either gray and it’s too nasty to eat or it’s OK. And can I get a second helping?”

Republicans who toured the facility rejected the criticisms raised by their Democrat counterparts.

Florida State Senator Blaise Ingoglia, who was part of the tour, told Politico, “The rhetoric does not match the reality. It’s basically all political theater coming from the [Democrats]. What they’re saying is pure bullshit.”

The visit and ensuing debate come amid ongoing national disagreements about border security and immigration enforcement.

Under President Donald Trump’s direction, Florida has taken a more active role in detaining and processing illegal migrants.

The Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies have drawn criticism from conservative leaders, who argue that federal inaction has pushed states to manage the crisis on their own.

In recent years, some Democrat lawmakers have taken taxpayer-funded trips abroad to advocate for migrants facing deportation.

Others have been arrested for allegedly interfering with federal or state officials during enforcement actions.

The Florida facility, now at the center of a political dispute, remains operational as state officials continue to expand detention capacity in support of national immigration enforcement efforts.
