Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced Monday the declassification and public release of more than 230,000 documents related to the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The release was carried out under the direction of President Donald Trump and fulfills a longstanding commitment to make public previously withheld information related to major U.S. political assassinations.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) issued a press release confirming that the document release was coordinated in partnership with the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the National Archives.

“This release is part of President Trump’s commitment to full transparency surrounding pivotal historical events,” the ODNI stated.
“The newly released files on Dr. King’s assassination have been digitized for the first time and include investigative materials long held in federal archives.”
According to the release, the documents include internal FBI memoranda, lead sheets, interviews, and materials connected to James Earl Ray — the man convicted of King’s assassination — and Ray’s former cellmate, who allegedly discussed an assassination plot with him.

Other documents contain foreign intelligence collected during Ray’s international flight following the shooting, including communications from Canadian law enforcement and newly disclosed CIA materials related to the manhunt.
“The documents include details about the FBI’s investigation into the assassination of MLK — including the discussion of potential leads, internal FBI memos detailing the progress of the case, and documents related to James Earl Ray’s former cellmate, who stated he discussed with Ray an alleged assassination plot,” the ODNI release noted.
“Additionally, as James Earl Ray fled the country following the assassination, the release includes unique foreign evidence from a Canadian police department. Never-before-seen CIA records outline overseas intelligence on the international hunt for the prime suspect in the assassination.”
Dr. Alveda King, niece of the slain civil rights leader, welcomed the release and thanked President Trump and DNI Gabbard for following through on their pledge.
“I am grateful to President Trump and DNI Gabbard for delivering on their pledge of transparency in the release of these documents on the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.,” Alveda King said.
“My uncle lived boldly in pursuit of truth and justice, and his enduring legacy of faith continues to inspire Americans to this day. While we continue to mourn his death, the declassification and release of these documents are a historic step towards the truth that the American people deserve.”

DNI Gabbard emphasized the significance of the release as a step toward full government transparency.
“The American people have waited nearly sixty years to see the full scope of the federal government’s investigation into Dr. King’s assassination,” Gabbard stated.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are ensuring that no stone is left unturned in our mission to deliver complete transparency on this pivotal and tragic event in our nation’s history. I extend my deepest appreciation to the King family for their support.”
Attorney General Pamela Bondi echoed that sentiment and praised the interagency cooperation behind the release.
“The American people deserve answers decades after the horrific assassination of one of our nation’s great leaders,” Bondi said.
“The Department of Justice is proud to partner with Director Gabbard and the ODNI at President Trump’s direction for this latest disclosure.”
This declassification follows earlier releases involving President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, forming part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to make public materials related to historically significant U.S. assassinations.
Although the release was widely applauded by historians and MLK’s niece, Dr. Alveda King, some supporters have questioned whether other classified materials — such as documents related to Jeffrey Epstein — will receive similar treatment in the future.
