Prominent conservative commentator Ben Shapiro slammed some on the right this Thursday for defending a private group chat among Republican college students that was full of offensive content.
The chat was exposed by Politico, a left-wing political outlet. After the chat was exposed, some Republicans, like Vice President JD Vance, dismissed the offensive content as “edgy, offensive jokes” and sought to draw attention to the far more offensive private messages of Jay Jones, a Democrat running for attorney general in Virginia.
Shapiro’s colleague at The Daily Wire, conservative commentator Matt Walsh, also pushed back by arguing that the offensive content is nothing when compared to the stark desire by the left to kill conservatives. Which is why, he continued, Republicans must all unite and not be divided by pseudo scandals such as the private chat story.
The Left actually wants me dead. Like specifically and personally. They’re the reason why I need security at my house. Why I worry for my children’s safety. We’ve had to make major changes to the way we live our daily lives to account for this danger. So when I say that I want to…

Neither Vance’s argument nor Walsh’s argument appeared to sway Shapiro, who began a segment on his show Thursday by addressing Vance’s argument first and positing that what the young Republicans had done was wrong, point-blank, period.
“If you put that stuff online, if you put that stuff in chats — if you actually authentically think that stuff, first of all, you’re wrong — but second of all, if you put stuff online, there are social consequences to saying and believing truly terrible things,” he said. “We all have social lines that we draw all the time.”
Shapiro then turned to Walsh’s argument by making the case that the right doesn’t have to unite with everybody who’s not a leftist to win.
“There’s this weird idea on the right that the left wins because they’re totally unified and they completely side with one another,” he began. “The left is not winning! I know that we are sort of a depressive right, that we’ve gotten addicted to the depressive. The left is not winning! ”
“Donald Trump has been president dos times, two times. Republicans are in control of the Senate. Republicans are in control of the House. Republicans are in control of the majority of governor’s mansions. Republicans are in control of the majority of state legislatures. The left is not winning because of their unity,” he added.
More importantly, he continued, it’s this desire on the left to unite with anybody who’s not right-wing that’s destroying the party.
“They are being destroyed because of the thing I’m talking about happening on the right, because they decided that the nutjobs and the radicals in their own party could not be condemned under any circumstances,” he said. “They decided to feature Ilhan Omar on the cover of magazines and unite around the crazy college protesters, and the BLM rioters, and the transgender radicals.”
“And guess what? They got their asses kicked because of it. Yes, they didn’t expel people from their party, but moderates walked away, the non-crazy walked away. This is the dirty little secret of how Donald Trump won the election of 2024. He ran as a moderate; people who are moderate picked him above the unified left that was siding with all of their radicals, and defending all of their radicals, and massaging all of their radicals,” he added.
Why did Americans choose the divided right over the unified left? Shapiro maintained it’s because most Americans aren’t lunatics.
Concluding his remarks, Shapiro slammed Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for her recent flirtations with the left and incessant criticisms — none of them remotely legitimate — of President Donald Trump.
“We need to be real about the agenda of many of the people who are continuing to rely on the kindness of the ‘traditional Republicans’ who ‘don’t want to attack right,’” he said.
“Marjorie Taylor Greene is dividing the Republican Party, not the people criticizing Marjorie Taylor Greene. She is attacking the president day in and day out. Who’s dividing the party, the people who mentioned it or Marjorie Taylor Greene?” he added.
