Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman delivered sharp criticism of the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of border security, saying failures to enforce immigration law resulted in an effectively open border and carried serious political and public safety consequences.
Fetterman said the administration did not adequately secure the southern border during a critical period, placing blame on both Joe Biden and former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“President Biden did a terrible job, and our border was effectively open at that point, whether Biden and Mayorkas did not secure our border,” Fetterman said.
He said he warned fellow Democrats well before the election that the issue would have consequences.
“I tried to warn my party back in 2023 that this would cost this in the election,” Fetterman said, adding that border security should be a bipartisan priority.
“America deserves to secure our border. I don’t know why every American can’t agree with that thing.”
Fetterman also argued that enforcing immigration law must include removing criminals from the country, calling deportations a point of broad agreement.

“And another thing, it’s the truth that we should all agree to deport all of the criminals, you know, that are here in our nation right now,” he said.
Despite his criticism, Fetterman described himself as supportive of immigration in principle and said enforcement should be paired with legal pathways for lawful migrants.
“And now this for me as a pro Democrat, pro immigration Democrat, I do think we need to develop a way for for citizenship, for the very hard working migrants that are amidst this world now too,” he said.
Fetterman also acknowledged what he described as more recent steps taken by the administration to address border enforcement, including arrests and enforcement actions.
“So as long as I do have to give credit to the President for securing our border, and now that’s why order and arrest all of the criminals,” he said.
He referenced recent deadly incidents tied to border-related failures and said the loss of American lives should never be accepted as collateral damage.
“And for that and the tragedy that happened, and we’ve lost two American citizens,” Fetterman said.
“I don’t think anyone in America wants that or that they would have voted for those things.”

Fetterman’s remarks reflect growing divisions within the Democratic Party over immigration enforcement, border security, and the political fallout from years of record illegal crossings. His comments place renewed emphasis on enforcement, deportations of criminals, and border control as core responsibilities of the federal government.
