Big-Market NFL Team Can’t Catch Break, Watches New QB Get Carted Off Field

Here we have yet another NFL team who can’t quite get their act together.

And the season hasn’t even started yet!

On day two of training, the New York Jets’ newly acquired starting quarterback Justin Fields had to be carted off the field after a teammate reportedly stepped on his foot.

Fields threw an (incomplete) pass to Jets tight end Jeremy Ruckert and went down on the play. He sat on the turf for several minutes before a trainer escorted him, limping, off the field.

He then sat in the injury tent for several minutes before trainers carted him to the locker room. Fields managed to limp his way into the team’s facility from there.

What a sad way to go out.

Fields reportedly suffered a dislocated toe from the ordeal, according to most recent reports.

Besting the Patriots by only one game in the AFC East with a 5-12 record last year, it’s safe to say the Jets were hoping for a smoother start to the season. (RELATED: Photographer’s Splashy Mishap Steals The Show At NFL Team’s Helmet Reveal)

Things were looking bright when Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the team in March after playing with the Pittsburgh Steelers for a year, and since signing, Fields has been expected to be the Jets’ starter.

Just the other day, Fields said he thought securing the role was going to be a walk in the park…

He thought he didn’t need to worry about fighting for his job like he had to last year with Russell Wilson and the Steelers.

“I think you don’t have to worry about as much,” Fields said after the team’s first camp practice on Wednesday. “Last year, like I said, it was kind of in a weird position, but I think, you don’t have to do as much thinking and you kind of just know where you are and focus on getting better, focus on leading the team each and every day, so it’s just not as much other stuff going around, so it’s good.”

Maybe Fields would like to eat his words right about now?

Here’s to hoping he heals in time for the season, and maybe this will be a lesson for Fields in not speaking too soon.
