Boston Shuts Down Icon Nightclub After Woman Dies, Everyone Starts Filming Instead Of Helping

Boston officials suspended Icon nightclub’s licenses Wednesday after a woman collapsed on the dance floor over the weekend, later died at a hospital, and police reported a crowd of patrons kept filming as EMTs tried to work.

Police were called around 12:30 a.m. Sunday to the Warrenton Street club for a report of a woman who had collapsed, CBS Boston reported, citing a Boston Police report. Officers found the woman “completely unresponsive,” and CPR was started before she was transported to a hospital, where she later died, according to the outlet. “We are deeply saddened by the medical emergency that occurred at our club early Sunday morning,” Icon said in a statement reported by CBS Boston. “Our staff responded immediately and called emergency services while an off-duty EMT rendered first aid.”

The police report described a scene where getting medical help to the woman required clearing out a crowd more interested in recording than assisting. Police said they had to “kick everyone out of the club because the crowd was videotaping the incident and ignoring officers’ demands to give them space for EMTs to work,” CBS Boston reported.

CBS Boston also reported police were told the woman had a heart condition, had smoked before arriving, and “had a few drinks” before the emergency.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu called the death “a horrible tragedy” and said the incident remains under active investigation, according to WCVB News.

The Boston Licensing Board is expected to hold a hearing on the future of Icon’s liquor license “in the coming weeks,” CBS Boston reported.
