Brexit Dividends Materialise as Vance Signals Economic Deal Inbound

J.D. Vance’s overnight interview with UnHerd will have British officials sighing with relief. Brexit dividends abound…

The Vice-President goes in on Europe’s weaknesses:

“We’re very frustrated — ‘we’ meaning me, the President, certainly the entire Trump administration — that European populations keep on crying out for more sensible economic and migration policies, and the leaders of Europe keep on going through these elections, and keep on offering the European peoples the opposite of what they seem to have voted for… The reality is — it’s blunt to say it, but it’s also true — that Europe’s entire security infrastructure, for my entire life, has been subsidised by the United States of America.”

Vance adds the UK, France, and Poland are the exceptions that prove the rule on Europe’s poor military self-defence capability. American dissatisfaction with the European project is placed on the EU. The UK on the other hand is close to a deal:

“We’re certainly working very hard with Keir Starmer’s government. The President really loves the United Kingdom. He loved the Queen. He admires and loves the King. It is a very important relationship… There’s a real cultural affinity. And of course, fundamentally America is an Anglo country. I think there’s a good chance that, yes, we’ll come to a great agreement that’s in the best interest of both countries.“

No chance for that if the UK was still part of the EU. Briefings as to the timings of the deal have varied wildly with no results yet. All while Labour puts the UK back under the jurisdiction of the ECJ…
