Brown University Bends Knee To Trump Admin

Brown University reached a settlement Wednesday with the Trump administration, agreeing to dole out $50 million and to also comply with requirements put forward by President Donald Trump, a senior White House official told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The Trump administration froze Brown’s $510 million in grants in April after warning a handful of institutions about actions pertaining to diversity, equity and inclusion and antisemitism. With the university taking out millions in loans Monday, the university closed the deal, with the administration agreeing to not engage in certain practices and previous policies. A senior White House official told the DCNF that the agreement will ensure Brown does not engage in “unlawful racial discrimination in admissions or university programming,” providing access to “all relevant data and information to rigorously assess compliance with its commitment to merit-based admissions.” The university will also adopt the definitions of “male” and “female” for its “women’s sports, programming, facilities, and housing.”

The university has agreed to not perform any gender reassignment surgeries “on minors or prescribe them puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones,” along with taking steps to improve the campus climate for “Jewish students and combat anti-Semitism,” according to a senior White House official.

In addition to the university’s new pledges, Brown will pay $50 million over 10 years “to state workforce development organizations that comply with anti-discrimination laws,” thus “supporting regional economic growth and career opportunities.”

On Monday, Brown announced its second multi-million-dollar loan since the Trump administration froze its federal grants, taking out $500 million in July compared to its first loan of $300 million.

With the agreement reached between the university and Trump’s administration, all Health and Human Services grants for Brown will be reinstated, and the school’s eligibility for future grants and awards will be restored, with pending investigations into the university being closed.

A three-year monitoring period has been established “to ensure compliance with the agreement and federal laws,” according to a senior White House official.
