A coordinated investigation between Addison police, the DuPage County Bomb Squad, and the ATF concluded that the explosion was most likely caused by a propane tank being transported in the truck.
Penske Truck Rental, the owner of the vehicle, issued a comment indicating that the driver may have been violating the rental agreement at the time.
“Our security and insurance team will be reviewing the matter. Under Penske’s rental agreement, explosive, flammable, or otherwise hazardous materials should not be transported in a consumer rental moving truck,” said a company spokesperson.
Ultimately, the explosion was ruled an accident.
