The New York City Campaign Finance Board reportedly fined former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo $675,000 while awarding millions in public matching funds to his opponent on Friday.
The board said that Cuomo’s mayoral campaign improperly colluded with a super PAC supporting him, according to multiple reports. The decisions represent another financial blow to Cuomo, who has been fined $1.3 million in total for improper coordination ahead of the June 24 Democratic mayoral primary, Politico reported.
Meanwhile, the board reportedly awarded $2.4 million in public matching funds to primary candidate Adrienne Adams, who is speaker of the New York City Council. The board said it is withholding the $1.3 million because it believes an ad produced by the pro-Cuomo PAC was not made independently of Cuomo’s campaign.
Cuomo’s and Adams’ campaigns did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.
Cuomo resigned as governor in 2021 after allegations of sexual assault — and faces the rebirth of another scandal as the Department of Justice investigates whether he lied to Congress about COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes that happened on his watch.
The first candidate in the primary to reach maximum public matching funds was Zohran Mamdani, a socialist state representative, the Gothamist reported. Mamdani has consistently polled second place behind Cuomo and has gained on Cuomo in the polls. Adrienne Adams polled in fifth place in a Wednesday Emerson College poll.
