Commentator Carl Higbie criticized high-tax states and the policies he says are driving residents and businesses to relocate to other parts of the country, arguing that migration patterns reflect dissatisfaction with taxes and the cost of living in several large states.
Higbie discussed the issue during remarks in which he pointed to population shifts from states such as New York, California, Illinois, and New Jersey toward states including Texas, Tennessee, and Florida.
“Like, what do millionaires get in your state, other than demonized?” Higbie said.

He argued that economic policies and the cost of living are discouraging business owners from remaining in certain states.
“It’s not patriotic to stay in New York. It’s idiotic. You. Kathy, you. And then the sign language lady on the side, I don’t even know, what does she I don’t even know that’s correct, but she drove them out,” Higbie said.
Higbie said business leaders who relocate to states with lower taxes and costs are unlikely to return under the same economic conditions.
“And also, why would you what businessman is going to go down to Florida play golf with their buddies, and imagine that like after a round of Go. Hey, successful business owners do I got a deal for you. Move your business back to the place you just left. Pay more taxes. The cost of living is 50% higher,” Higbie said.

He continued, “Maybe get mugged or raped, I don’t know. Just don’t call 911, during Ramadan. It’s great. Come on back. Yeah, hard pass from anybody with half a brain.”
Higbie said states hoping to bring companies back would need to pursue policies designed to attract investment.
“You want companies to come back, you’re going to have to instead. Have to incentivize them,” he said.
He added that lowering taxes could be one approach.
“Just throwing this out there too. You can lower taxes. I don’t know,” Higbie said.
Higbie also pointed to what he described as migration patterns that he believes demonstrate the impact of tax policies.
“Maybe guys, there’s, like, empirical evidence that liberal policies suck,” Higbie said.
He continued, “Look, here are the top four states that people are leaving, California, New York, Illinois and New Jersey, all Democrat states with the number one reason people are leaving is because of taxes, and yet these liberals keep raising them.”
Higbie said many of those leaving are relocating to states with lower taxes and less government regulation.
“And where are they going? Texas, Tennessee and Florida, states with limited government, maximum freedom and less taxes,” he said.
He also argued that the trend is not difficult to understand.
“This is not hard yet. Some of the states with the large these liberal states, are the largest states with bachelor’s degrees in them nationwide, and they can’t figure out why people are leaving,” Higbie said.
He added that the situation could be interpreted as a contradiction between available data and policy decisions.
“I mean, it’s it would be a stand up routine,” Higbie said.
Higbie said he believes the same policy approach is also being promoted at the national level by some lawmakers.
“But it doesn’t stop at the state level. Bernie Sanders, he wants to make this nationwide,” Higbie said.
He noted Sanders has advocated higher taxes on wealthy Americans.
“He’s been trying to do this for, like, all 50 years. He’s been in office, but it was for millionaires and billionaires. But once he became a millionaire, he wants to only do it for billionaires now,” Higbie said.
Higbie contrasted what he described as different philosophical views between conservatives and liberals regarding taxation and government authority.
“Now, the fundamental difference between actual Republicans and liberals as liberals believe the money that you take home is what the government allows you to keep,” Higbie said.
“Now, real conservatives believe that the money the government takes is what we the people allow them to take before we dump tea in the harbor and start shooting people,” he added.
Higbie also questioned whether targeting the wealth of billionaires could meaningfully fund government spending.
“The real thing, the thing that really gets me, though, and apparently lost on literally every single liberal, is if you taxed 100% of the revenue of every billionaire, you would barely have enough money to run the government for a month,” Higbie said.
He continued by arguing that even confiscating all billionaire wealth would not sustain government spending for long.
“If you took 100% of all of the total wealth of all the billionaires, confiscate and liquidate all of their stuff and their assets and their cash, you could only run the country for like half a year,” Higbie said.
He also said such actions would affect economic investment and development.
“And after that, there’d be no more capital to invest in business. There’d be no more growth. There’d be no more advancements in development and things like this,” Higbie said.
Higbie concluded by suggesting that policymakers in both parties should examine federal spending levels.
“But what’s even more mind blowing to me, with even facing those statistics, at no point do either Republicans or Democrats think like, Hmm, maybe we should stop spending so much money,” Higbie said.
“All this stuff has been tried in cities and states, and we know what works and what doesn’t work. We have the internet every time the result from taxes is people leave every time,” he said.
Higbie added that policymakers have access to data showing migration trends.
“What’s even more staggering is that Democrats have access to all this data, and they still run on these policies,” Higbie said.
He concluded by suggesting voters continue to support the same policies despite those trends.
“And they’re either just as stupid or count on the stupidity of the electorate, because over 51% of these states keep putting them back in charge,” Higbie said.
