Celtics Minority Owner Steve Pagliuca Looking To Move Connecticut Sun To Boston With $325 Million Purchase

Steve Pagliuca is looking to make himself king!

A group that’s led by the minority owner of the Boston Celtics has bought the Connecticut Sun for a record-high $325 million with the intention to move the franchise to Beantown. The league, however, isn’t exactly fond of that idea.

The sale of the team still needs approval from the WNBA and their board of governors, and it appears that a possible move for the Sun is making them hesitant to do so.

“Relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams,” said the WNBA in an official statement, per OutKick. “As part of our most recent expansion process, in which three new franchises were awarded to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia on June 30, 2025, nine additional cities also applied for WNBA teams and remain under active consideration. “No groups from Boston applied for a team at that time and those other cities remain under consideration based on the extensive work they did as part of the expansion process and currently have priority over Boston.”

But that’s not stopping Pagliuca and his partner Bill Chisholm from wanting the Sun in Boston. In fact, Pagliuca wants the Sun in Boston so bad that he’s already put up $100 million for a brand new “world-class” practice facility to see a gargantuan improvement over the facilities the team currently use.

“I’ve been told the Sun feel that a move to Boston is what would be great for their players,” said Trenni Casey of NBC Sports Boston. “This would be a great opportunity for them to play in the TD Garden, to play in a huge market, to have the best of the best, which is what the WNBA players have been fighting for.”

Needless to say, this is going to be a very interesting situation to pay attention to.
