A Christian street preacher who was arrested after he criticised Islam and questioned the teachings of the Qur’an has seen the charges against him dropped.
John Steele was detained by police officers in Rotherham town centre in June following an incident where he asked a Muslim member of the public what the Qur’an says about domestic violence.
Steele, who has preached the gospel in public spaces for 25 years without incident, was later approached by four police officers and told he may have committed a ‘non-crime hate incident’.
The police asked for his name and address, but he refused to give his details. He was then arrested and taken to a police station, where he was held, fingerprinted, and DNA-swabbed.
