Radio host Charlamagne tha God told former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg during a Thursday interview on his radio show, “The Breakfast Club,” that his “biggest problem with Democrats” is they are currently making statements they should have made years ago.
Former President Barack Obama told Democrats to “just toughen up” and do “less navel-gazing” and “whining” at a July 11 fundraiser, a statement Charlamagne said on the July 15 edition of “The Breakfast Club” came too late. On the Thursday edition of the show, Charlamagne listed Obama’s statement, and Democrats acknowledging former President Joe Biden was too elderly to run for reelection, as things Democrats have admitted long after the American public already realized. “My biggest problem with Democrats is it’s like everything they’re saying now, you should have been saying two, three years ago. Like, we’ve been saying Democrats was cowards,” Charlamagne said. “So yeah, yes, y’all should have been toughened up. Jake Tapper with ‘The Original Sin’ — and you read that book, and you see everybody knew that Biden was too old to run, but nobody said anything.”
“But now everybody wants to speak up. His press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, saying she’s an independent now,” he continued. “I’m like, ‘Yo, why weren’t y’all saying this two, three years ago?’ All these things that y’all are saying, we the people had been saying.”
Buttigieg pushed back, arguing that Democrats have remained consistent on policy. However, he acknowledged his party needs to demonstrate more “toughness” like Republicans do.
“I would say also, though, there are a lot of things we were fighting for then that we’re fighting for now. The Medicaid stuff is a good example,” Buttigieg said. “The transportation stuff, right? Sometimes we were taking hits for people thinking we were caring too much about taking care of neighborhoods that were underinvested in or hurt in the past. I believed that it was the right thing to do then. I believe it’s the right thing to do now.”
“But yeah, we have to show a level of toughness just in order to be credible, I think, and in order to go up against these guys who obviously — you can fault them for all kinds of things — but they definitely project toughness,” he added.
Charlamagne said on July 15 that Democrats have been “cowards” for many years now. He said their “cowardice” explained why they did not force Biden not to run for reelection.
“I can give countless examples of Democrats needing to show a spine. Like, for example, they should have told Biden that he was going to be a one-term president,” he said at the time. “It wasn’t up to him. So, it’s just wild to hear President Obama say that now as if Democrats haven’t been cowards for the past decade.”
Biden remained in the race until July 2024, weeks after a calamitous debate performance against President Donald Trump.
Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday commemorated the first anniversary of Biden dropping out by posting a 14-minute montage of Democrats asserting the former president was mentally fit. Democrats even chanted, “Four more years!” during Biden’s March 2024 State of the Union address.
