Charlie Sheen Says He Noticed Matthew Perry Was Not Sober Before Actor’s Fatal Overdose

Actor Charlie Sheen told Piers Morgan during an interview this week that he believed Matthew Perry was not sober in the year leading up to his death. Speaking on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” Tuesday, Sheen said he noticed signs of drug use while Perry was promoting his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, as reported by Page Six.

“I could tell he wasn’t sober talking about a book that is all about sobriety and recovery,” Sheen said. The 60-year-old “Two and a Half Men” star added that he “felt really bad” after listening to portions of the audiobook.

“When I heard a little snippet … he didn’t have that perfect, specific, laser-focused diction that he always had delivering comedy or [doing] anything at the level that he did,” Sheen recalled. “I heard a man who was handicapped.”

Perry released his book in November 2022 and was found dead in October 2023 at his Los Angeles home. His death was ruled a ketamine overdose.

Sheen admitted he had read Perry’s book just weeks before the actor’s death. The memoir included a mention of Sheen, with Perry writing, “F**k Charlie Sheen. I’m going to be just as famous one day.”

Sheen said he considered reaching out after reading the book but never did. “I read his book, and I read it in a day, and I loved it. And I’m so proud of him and inspired by it. … I could feel that sort of the prison that he put himself in,” he said.

Sheen also spoke about the “common ground” they shared as actors who had both struggled with addiction. “I was going to call him … for a cup of coffee or something. And regrettably, I didn’t,” Sheen admitted.

The Golden Globe winner said he had never tried ketamine, the drug that killed Perry. “I never did it,” Sheen said. “I knew a couple people that did and so I would see them on it. It just wasn’t a color I knew I would look good in.”

Sheen explained that he and Perry had crossed paths in recovery circles. He said he attended a support group run by Perry a few times and met his third ex-wife, Brooke Mueller, at a party where Perry was also present.

Mueller, 48, became part of the investigation into Perry’s death due to her connections with individuals charged with supplying ketamine. She was reported to be nine months sober as of September 2024.
