Chilean authorities in Antarctica release American pilot Ethan Guo

Chilean authorities in Antarctica have allowed American pilot Ethan Guo, who is flying worldwide to raise money to fight cancer, to leave a Chilean Air Force base there after a two-month stay.

On Saturday, Mr. Guo returned to the South American mainland at Punta Arenas, Chile, where he had flown out of in June. The pilot and influencer now hopes to resume his flight to all seven continents to raise money for pediatric cancer research at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Mr. Guo wanted to fly his Cessna 182Q out of Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Martin Airport in Antarctica, but was barred by Chilean authorities from flying himself.

“We are coordinating with Chile’s aviation authority, who have been supportive in arranging for another pilot to fly the aircraft to the mainland. Once that occurs, I look forward to resuming my global fight against cancer,” Mr. Guo said, according to ABC News.

The base impounded Mr. Guo, 20, after he landed there in June.

Mr. Guo says he landed there after having technical problems while flying to Ushuaia, Argentina. But Chilean prosecutors said he faked his flight plans and landed deliberately in Chilean Antarctica.

Mr. Guo avoided charges, but was required to donate $30,000 to a Chilean pediatric cancer research foundation, leave the country and not return for three years.

Despite his disagreements with Chilean authorities, Mr. Guo said that “the Chilean people have been incredibly hospitable, they’ve been fantastic people. They’ve taken care of me. They’ve taught me Spanish, and they’ve treated me like family,” according to The Associated Press.
