Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday touted that “public sentiment” is moving in the Democrats’ direction, though public polling says otherwise.
While President Donald Trump’s approval has been underwater in recent polling, the American public has shown even more disdain for the Democratic Party. Schumer, appearing to ignore the negative polling for Democrats, said that “public sentiment” is shifting in the Democrats’ favor.
“And the reason our caucus is feeling very good about our future, we know we have to work on it day in and day out, [is] because we know we’re on the side of the American people and [Republicans] are not,” Schumer told CNN host Kaitlan Collins. “And you know the political process, you have to fight, you have to protest, you have to do everything you can. And public sentiment is everything. And the public sentiment is turning in our direction.”

A CNN poll found that 61% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters disapprove of their party’s leadership. Schumer stated that the public knows that Democratic leadership is fighting for them.
“But if you’ve been doing that, then why are the numbers as low as they are for Democrats?” Collins asked.
“Well it takes awhile. We’ve been doing it day in, day out. Day in, day out. And, the first step has been for them to see how bad Trump is because he tries to drown the airwaves, he tries to distract people with things like Gulf of America, Panama and Greenland. But it’s not working. And as they realize who Trump is, and they contrast that with us, they’re gonna see who our party is more and more and more, and I think we’ll be successful.”
Among Democrat and Democrat-leaning independents younger than 35, 14% have a favorable view of the party while 24% disapprove, according to the poll. Among those in the party aged 65 or older, 52% hold a favorable view.
Schumer has also received negative marks from Democrat voters, with 17% holding a favorable view and 44% disapproving of him, according to the CNN poll. Collins reminded Schumer that the public is “not turning to Democrats” as they largely disapprove of Trump’s handling of key issues.
“Specifically for you, sir, in the first 100 days, you went from a 46% favorability rating to 31%. Why do you think that’s happened in the last 100 days? What do you attribute that to?” Collins asked.
“Look, the polls come and go. Okay? I’ve been through all the years and I’ve seen them. I pay attention to doing the right thing. And when you do the right thing, things work out all right. We are doing the right thing. We are focusing on how bad Trump is.”
A CNN/SSRS poll found in March that Democrats had a 29% favorability rating, the lowest rating since 1992, while a national NBC News poll indicated that the Democrats had a 27% positive rating.
A survey conducted by ABC News and The Washington Post found that 37% of Americans trust Trump to do a “better job handling the country’s problems,” while 30% trust Democrats. It further found that 7 in 10 Americans believe that Democrats are “out of touch” with the public, while 6 in 10 said the same about Trump.
