The government has just published the Tory-commissioned review into EDI expenditure in the Civil Service. It sought to work out how much was being spent on woke projects and staff across “19 ministerial departments, 16 non-ministerial departments and 45 arm’s-length bodies which are considered to be part of the Civil Service.” A noble effort…

EDI was defined as “internally focussed activities that benefit equality, diversity and inclusion within the workplace and workforce” and crucially departments “were asked to make informed decisions about what falls within ‘EDI’ within their organisation, and what doesn’t.” Expect downward fiddling…

The report found that over a financial year the total spend on EDI in the central Civil Service was a large £27.1 million:

In addition the review found that at the end of 2023 there were 350 full-time equivalent staff devoted entirely to EDI roles. They should be the first to go in the spending review…

There were also 570 diversity networks with 2,965 committee members attracting a taxpayer bill of £534,000 in one year alone. Phase two, which looked at the “big five” (DWP, HO, HMRC, MoD, MoJ) departments in the 2023/24 year found their spend on EDI alone at £12,797,000.
