CNN Contributor Says With Straight Face Trump Third Term Talk Has Been ‘Incredibly Triggering’ For Democrats

CNN contributor Lulu Garcia-Navarro said Friday on CNN’s “The Arena” that talk and trolling about a potential third term for term-limited President Donald Trump has been “incredibly triggering” for Democrats.

Amid speculation about Trump seeking a third term — from which he is constitutionally ineligible — the president posted a meme on Truth Social on Sunday showing a campaign yard sign with various years and ending with “Trump 4eva.” While discussing the online jokes and a recent comment from former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, Garcia-Navarro said she didn’t believe the conversations were simply “trolling.” (RELATED: ‘The View’ Co-Host Alyssa Farah Griffin Asks Sonia Sotomayor If Trump Can Serve Third Term)

“You know, what I will say is that this is incredibly triggering to Democrats. And people use the word trolling. I don’t know that this is trolling necessarily. What I would say is that this doesn’t come out of a vacuum. I mean, this was a president who tried to launch an insurrection on January 6,” Garcia-Navarro said.

“This is a president who’s still trying to litigate the 2020 election.  This is a president who is putting people in positions of power that has to do with our next election, too, that are election deniers. I mean … there are many things that could lead one to believe that it is not beyond the realm of possibility,” Garcia-Navarro added. “We wouldn’t be saying this if this were [former President Joe] Biden. We wouldn’t be saying this if this were [former President Barack] Obama.”

During an interview with The Economist released Thursday, Bannon told reporters he believes Trump will go for a third term in order to “finish” what the party has started.

“I know this will drive you guys crazy, but [Trump] he’s a vehicle of divine providence. He’s an instrument. He’s very imperfect. He’s not churchy, not particularly religious, but he’s an instrument of divine will,” Bannon said. “You could tell this of how he’s pulled this off. We need him for at least one more term, right? And he’ll get that in 28.”

Despite speculation about the president running for another term, the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1951, states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

However, in March, law professor and ABC News contributor Kim Wehle suggested the Supreme Court may allow another chance for Trump in the next presidential election, following the high court’s ruling that Colorado, Maine and Illinois could not remove him from the ballot under the 14th Amendment.

Trump previously addressed the speculation of a third term in March with NBC’s Kristen Welker, saying that while he’s heard “a lot of people” want him to run, he’s “focused on the current” administration.

“I’m not joking,” Trump said during the interview. “But I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.”
