CNN, MSNBC Called LA Riots ‘Peaceful’ 171 Times

CNN and MSNBC referred to riots in Los Angeles as “peaceful” 171 times as of Monday afternoon since the violence broke out following a Friday raid by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a Daily Caller News Foundation review found.

President Donald Trump ordered the National Guard to deploy Saturday as the riots continued in Los Angeles following a raid by ICE at a Home Depot, with video posted to social media showing an individual wearing a motorcycle helmet throwing rocks at the windshields of vehicles containing ICE agents with the FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to that person’s arrest. Despite the videos of fires burning appearing on those networks, they used the term “peaceful” dozens of times, according to a DCNF review of Grabien data. While the phrase “peaceful protests” did not appear on CNN until Sunday, it has appeared 30 times on the network, with 25 of the utterances taking place Sunday. The phrase has been used 16 times on MSNBC, 12 of them on Sunday.

The term “peaceful protest” was used 124 times from Friday to Sunday on the two corporate 24-hour news channels. CNN used that term 69 times, while MSNBC used it 55 times.

In one instance Monday, MSNBC host Ana Cabrera claimed “vastly peaceful protests” against the ICE raids were occurring in Los Angeles.

“Let’s bring this all back to where it started,” Cabrera said during a segment with Alyssa Mireless, the deputy state director for California for the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). “Vastly peaceful protests of ICE operations in the Los Angeles area.”

During a Monday appearance on The Situation Room, former Biden administration official Sabrina Singh argued that what went on in Los Angeles was “for the most part, peaceful protests” even as video of rioters and law enforcement personnel clashing aired.

Fox News reporter Bill Melugin posted video showing ICE agents in one of the vehicles being hit with rocks. Melugin posted additional video and photos of the aftermath, including a photo of an injury suffered by one ICE agent while the video showed a windshield with significant damage after a rioter threw a rock at it.

“Tonight we had individuals out there shooting commercial-grade fireworks at our officers that can kill you,” Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McConnell said during a Sunday press conference, ABC7.com reported.

“There’s nothing peaceful about lighting cars on fire, pummeling ICE enforcement officers with rocks or defacing public property,” Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Mainstream media is telling Americans to not believe their lying eyes.”

Corporate media networks downplayed the riots following the death of George Floyd in police custody in May 2020 that killed at least 24 people and caused nearly $1 billion in property damage. (RELATED: Trump Deploys National Guard To Blue City)

The White House was locked down during one of the riots from May 29-31, 2020, that left 60 Secret Service agents injured. The Secret Service reportedly moved then-President Trump to a bunker during the incident, according to CNN.

CNN also claimed that riots in Wisconsin following a police-involved shooting in the summer of 2020 were “fiery but mostly peaceful” in a chyron.
