President Donald Trump closed out one of the most consequential weeks of his presidency, marked by strategic military success, economic progress, a major NATO breakthrough, and a strengthened position on immigration and executive authority.
Even CNN’s Michael Smerconish acknowledged the breadth of achievements in a weekend segment that aired nationally, highlighting Trump’s domestic and foreign policy impact.
Smerconish opened by pointing to the President’s successful covert mission against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, stating, “The mission was carried out with stealth and with precision. There were no American casualties, and while Congress is divided after receiving briefings on the extent of the damage, I’m sure that we’ve derailed Iran’s nuclear program, at least temporarily, and there’s some valuable deterrent effect for America’s adversaries.”

Shortly after the mission, President Trump departed for Europe, where he participated in NATO meetings.
Speaking about Trump’s remarks on tensions between Israel and Iran just before the trip, Smerconish remarked that it was “the most unfiltered, non-controversial, direct words that I can recall anybody ever saying about the Middle East.”
President Trump, speaking candidly to the press, said:
“We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing. Do you understand that?”
At the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump secured a landmark agreement from member nations to raise their defense spending target to 5% of GDP by 2035. Smerconish noted, “Cut to the Hague where he arrived for NATO meetings and was able to wrangle an agreement from our allies to more than double their defense spending target from 2% of gross domestic product to 5% by 2035.”

Trump also showed a rare moment of empathy during a press conference, according to Smerconish.
When a Ukrainian reporter, whose husband is serving as a soldier, asked about missile support, Trump expressed concern and understanding. In the same event, he reflected on America’s role in global defense partnerships:
“They want to protect their country, and they need the United States, and without the United States, it’s not going to be the same. And I left here differently. I left here saying that these people really love their countries. It’s not a rip off, and we’re here to help them protect their country.”
Back in Washington, Trump claimed that a trade deal with China had been finalized, with another one expected soon with India. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed to Bloomberg that the deal with China had been signed earlier in the week.
China’s Commerce Ministry also stated that both sides had confirmed the details.
Smerconish said, “Trump claimed that he’s reached a trade deal with China, and soon expects the same with India.”
He added that despite past market turbulence caused by tariffs, the economic indicators are now moving positively.
“The S&P 500, NASDAQ hit record highs just yesterday,” he reported.
Inflation has dropped to 2.4%, down from 7% four years ago, while blue-collar workers have seen real wage growth of 1.7% in just five months under Trump — the largest such increase in nearly three generations.
Smerconish also noted that General Electric announced a $450 million investment to move appliance manufacturing from China to Kentucky.
“There’s also hope among some that Trump’s big, beautiful bill will give further financial relief to blue collar workers,” he said.
Border security numbers show a dramatic drop in illegal crossings. According to CBP’s May update, daily border encounters are down to 282 — a 93% drop from the previous year and the lowest since the early 1960s.
That success appears to be resonating with Latino voters.
“Perhaps the loudest cheering for those border numbers is coming from America’s Latino community,” Smerconish said.
He cited Pew Research data showing a marked shift in Latino voter preference.
Trump’s support among Hispanics grew significantly from past election cycles.
Hillary Clinton won Latinos by 38 points in 2016, Biden by 25, and Kamala Harris by just 3 points.
Pew also reported that if all eligible voters had participated in 2024, Trump’s margin would have expanded — with 44% of nonvoters favoring Trump, compared to 40% for Harris.
Meanwhile, Trump’s executive authority received a boost from the Supreme Court. In a major ruling, the Court struck down nationwide injunctions issued by district judges against Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship.
Smerconish noted, “This will, of course, strengthen executive power both for Trump and for his successors.”
Smerconish concluded the segment by referencing the Democratic Socialist nominee for New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani, and how it might offer Trump a useful contrast in future campaigns.
“It gives him the perfect foil, someone to play off in future political battles,” he said.
Reflecting on Trump’s second term approach, Smerconish stated, “This time is different. This time, he came with a plan and a cabinet with senior advisors comprised of loyalists, all well known to the President… By any objective measure, President Trump has his opponents on the run.”
WATCH:
President Trump had a historically good week. In fact it might be the best week of President Trump’s presidency.
Don’t take my word for it, take CNN’s.
