The U.S. Coast Guard announced a record-setting drug seizure in fiscal year 2025, confiscating nearly 510,000 pounds of cocaine — the largest amount ever captured in the service’s history, as reported by Fox News.
Officials said the historic haul represents nearly three times the Coast Guard’s annual average and is the result of intensified anti-cartel operations launched under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Adm. Kevin Lunday, acting commandant of the Coast Guard, said the achievement reflects the administration’s expanded efforts to secure U.S. borders and maritime routes.

“The Coast Guard’s top priority is to achieve complete operational control of the U.S. border and maritime approaches,” Lunday said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
“We own the sea, and this historic amount of cocaine seized shows we are defeating narco-terrorist and cartel operations to protect our communities and keep dangerous drugs off our streets.”
The Coast Guard’s enhanced efforts are part of a broader federal campaign to combat drug trafficking and transnational criminal networks. In August, the service launched Operation Pacific Viper, a joint mission with the U.S. Navy to target drug smuggling routes in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
Since its launch, the operation has confiscated roughly 100,000 pounds of cocaine — averaging 1,600 pounds seized per day.

The Trump administration has also reinforced border security efforts along the Rio Grande through Operation River Wall, a coordinated “surge operation” designed to intercept drug shipments before they enter U.S. territory.
Under the initiative, the Coast Guard has deployed additional shallow-water craft, command and control assets, tactical response teams, and patrol units along key points of the Texas border.

In February, President Trump’s administration designated several of the most violent drug cartels — including Sinaloa and Tren de Aragua — as foreign terrorist organizations, allowing U.S. forces to take direct action against cartel infrastructure.
The designation has provided legal authority for maritime interdictions and targeted strikes on smuggling vessels in international waters.
According to a White House memo sent to lawmakers on September 30, the United States is now engaged in a “non-international armed conflict” with cartel-linked drug smugglers.
The document confirmed that more than 15 maritime strikes have been conducted against cartel vessels operating near Venezuela and throughout the Eastern Pacific.

Despite the administration’s successes, several lawmakers — including Sens. Adam Schiff of California, Tim Kaine of Virginia, and Rand Paul of Kentucky — have raised concerns over the scope of U.S. military authority in these operations.
The trio introduced a War Powers Resolution seeking to prohibit American armed forces from engaging in hostilities against Venezuela without congressional approval.
The Coast Guard, however, maintains that its operations remain fully within its legal mandate and continue to focus on intercepting drug shipments before they reach U.S. shores.
Officials said the agency’s 2025 record underscores what they described as a renewed era of decisive enforcement against narco-trafficking networks under President Trump’s leadership.
