Colombian presidential candidate Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after being shot during a campaign speech in Bogotá, according to multiple news agencies.
Uribe Turbay, 39, a senator from the conservative Centro Democrático party, was attacked Saturday while addressing supporters in Colombia’s capital. Police arrested a 15-year-old suspect carrying a 9mm Glock-type firearm, according to the BBC, which cited a statement from the Colombian attorney general’s office. Uribe Turbay was admitted to the Fundación Santa Fe clinic in critical condition, where he is receiving priority medical care, the Associated Press reported. Paramedics told the AFP news agency that the senator was shot once in the knee and twice in the head.
Maria Claudia Tarazona, Uribe Turbay’s wife, posted on X early Sunday that her husband was “fighting for his life” and asked for prayers for the medical team treating him.

The Colombian government condemned the shooting in a statement released Saturday, calling it “an attack not only against the personal integrity of the senator, but also against democracy, freedom of thought and the legitimate exercise of politics in Colombia.” The statement continued, “Any act that seeks to silence through intimidation or violence those who participate in public life is unacceptable and deserves the deepest repudiation by the state and the citizenry.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement late Saturday condemning the attempted assassination “in the strongest possible terms.” Rubio called the shooting “a direct threat to democracy and the result of the violent leftist rhetoric coming from the highest levels of the Colombian government.” He warned that Colombia “can’t afford to go back to dark days of political violence” and urged President Gustavo Petro to “dial back the inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials.”
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
