Comedian says he was cut from Sex in the City revival cast in a wokeness purge

A comedian’s claims about the supposed reason he was cut from the “Sex and the City” revival left many skeptical: “I’m not a scholar of the show, but this seems an unlikely truth.”

Last week, San Diego Comic-Con welcomed myriad fandoms to the annual convention that, in part, previewed select upcoming projects from the entertainment industry. During an interview at the event, comedian Bobby Lee contended to Entertainment Weekly that his character was cut from HBO Max’s “And Just Like That” as part of an attempt to pare down “woke elements.”

For the first two seasons of the show, Lee portrayed Jackie Nee in a recurring role on star Carrie Fisher’s character Carrie Bradshaw’s podcast. Having not been brought back for the third season, he mentioned Cynthia Nixon’s character Miranda Hobbes’ non-binary love interest when he told Entertainment Weekly, “Some of the woke elements of the show, they got rid of, and I think I was a part of that. I think Sara [Ramirez] didn’t come back, and some other people.”

“They tried to put minorities in, and — I don’t know,” he added. “I never saw the show.”

Countering Lee’s claim, HBO Director of Media Relations Erin Tresco disputed the theory when she told Fox News Digital, “Carrie is no longer hosting a podcast, and instead focused on her novel; the storyline of characters involved in the podcast came to a conclusion.”

Further proof that the show had no trouble with offensive content came as the season premiere featured Rosie O’Donnell portraying a virgin nun named Mary who had a lesbian tryst with Nixon’s character, that later, as detailed by the New York Post, prompted the joke at the expense of Christians from Parker, “So, you deflowered the Virgin Mary?”

Those familiar with the content that picked up 11 years after the original series had concluded were understandably skeptical of Lee’s claims that the show would be concerned about being woke, with some suggesting variations of, “Nah. If he was woke, he’d get a raise and put on all the promotional material.”

For his part, Lee still shared positive comments about the cast, telling Entertainment Weekly, “Sarah Jessica Parker is the nicest person I’ve ever met. She made me feel so at ease. I like everyone on there. It was fun. I never have bad blood with anybody. You know what I mean? I am nice. I show up on time.”

He also expressed surprise that he was initially asked to be on the show, “Number one, I don’t even know why they asked. And I was super scared to do it. Because it wasn’t my brand, really. You know what I mean? But I did it. I walked through the fear.”
