Corporate media’s coverage of Boulder terror attack is beyond shameful

A review of corporate media’s shifting coverage of the suspected antisemitic terror attack in Colorado named and shamed outlets that buried key details.

“This is what they do.”

Not even two weeks after two Israeli Embassy staffers were slain in Washington, D.C., an Egyptian national was arrested in Boulder, Colorado, after allegedly attacking the pro-Israel group Run for Their Lives during an event to support hostages taken by Hamas. Those facts didn’t stop corporate media outlets from appearing to raise questions about the motives of the “peaceful” victims while glossing over the facts about the “end Zionists” shouting perpetrator.

“Why did CNN [feel] the need to put ‘peaceful’ in quotes. The idea is to make it seem that there is a question as to whether it was peaceful,” began a lengthy thread by Middle East security analyst Seth Frantzman, who also called out ABC News, BBC, CBS News and NBC News for how they reported on the attack and alleged suspect Mohamed Sabry Soliman.

As he detailed, the CNN report read, “A man reportedly set people on fire in Boulder, Colorado, leaving multiple individuals injured, the city’s police chief said, as people gathered for a ‘peaceful’ pro-Israeli demonstration.”

The outlet also questioned the FBI’s decision to label the incident “a targeted terror attack,” while, as Frantzman pointed out, leaving out the statements attributed to Soliman that included reported shouts of “Free Palestine” and “end Zionists.”

“It does say, ‘The source stressed potential mental health concerns have not yet been ruled out, which could factor into any charging direction.’ They don’t do reporting on the actual event, they try to make it seem as if it being ‘peaceful’ is a controversial issue; but then do no reporting about what the suspect said,” relayed the analyst.

He went on to acknowledge that NBC News “is better” as it left out quote marks before juxtaposing the coverage with that of CNN.

An initial headline from CBS News only said “people” were burned without explaining what the event was until later in the report and in subsequent coverage, while MSNBC brought on a guest who referred to the suspect as a “white male.”

“This is how legacy media reported an attack on people. This is what they do. They downplay the motive and refuse to report what the perpetrator said…every attempt is made to hide all the details. It’s systematic. It’s not just ‘whoops’…it’s systematic,” Frantzman argued. “The screenshots tell you how they did this. It has been hours since this happened. It’s not that they didn’t know. They know…they see it…and they too often work to hide and minimize it.”

Later reporting could be seen indicating that the group had been gathered to support Israeli hostages of Hamas while leaning heavily on the fact that the FBI was referring to the fiery attack as terrorism.

Other shaming of headlines highlighted the linguistic lengths taken to describe the victims, as NBC News had referred to them as “Gaza-hostage-awareness marchers,” begging the question, “How many euphemisms for ‘Jews’ did NBC workshop before they landed on ‘Gaza hostage awareness marchers’?”
