The LibDem/Green-led Wealden District Council, which has been cajoled this week into saying it will challenge the Home Office on its decision to put up to 600 male asylum seekers in the local military training camp, is spending time organising a ‘Western-themed party.’ Nothing more pressing to do?
At an all-council meeting yesterday Green councillor Christina Coleman read out a letter to residents which complained that similar legal cases “have failed” and “anyone can initiate a judicial review” – not only the council. After discussing the camp Chair of the Council LibDem Gavin Blake-Coggins announced:
“We are going to have a civic, kind of, party thing. It’ll be a western-themed evening. It will be February or March. I wanted the date before today so I could tell you about it but I won’t have the confirmed date until Friday. So it’ll be a western-themed night. Turn up looking like cowboys.”
The council has been under intense fire especially after 2,000 local residents marched against the camp over the weekend. Green Party national deputy leader and deputy council leader Rachel Millward – present at the meeting – was mocked previously for claiming the asylum seekers were “doctors” and “engineers.” Once everyone is in a cowboy outfit at the council’s party you won’t be able to tell either way…
