Law enforcement authorities reported that Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, 24, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday morning.
The Cowboys released a statement Thursday without specifying a cause of death.
“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. The Cowboys have provided counseling resources to all players, coaches, and staff. The team is currently on its bye week and did not resume practice until Monday.
Frisco (Texas) Police stated that the department issued a response to help the Texas Department of Public Safety in finding a vehicle that evaded state troopers in a pursuit Wednesday while entering the city around 10:39 p.m. CT, according to ESPN.

DPS troopers located Kneeland‘s crashed vehicle on southbound Dallas Parkway around Warren Parkway. The report states that Kneeland fled the scene on foot, prompting officers to search the area using K-9 and drone units, per ESPN.
While authorities searched for Kneeland, a dispatcher informed officers that individuals close to him said that Kneeland sent a group text message “saying goodbye. They’re concerned for his welfare,” per recordings from Broadcastify, an archive of public safety radio communications.
Around three hours later, Kneeland was discovered with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to ESPN.
