Mediaite founder Dan Abrams slammed the corporate press on Friday for ignoring the bombshell mortgage fraud allegations against New York Attorney General Letitia James.
As previously reported, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) has accused James of engaging in mortgage fraud and falsifying documents pertaining to two properties — one in Norfolk, Virginia, and the other in Brooklyn, New York.
FHFA director William Pulte argued in a letter sent this week to the Department of Justice that James listed her Norfolk home as her “principal residence” despite living in New York and serving in the state’s government as a public office holder.
He further alleged that James “appears to have falsified records in order to meet certain lending requirements and receive favorable loan terms,” which he wrote “could be violations of the criminal code.”

Speaking this Friday on his SiriusXM show “POTUS Politics,” Abrams began by slamming James over her blatant hypocrisy.
“Obviously, if she’s doing this, this isn’t just trouble for her legally — it also just reeks of hypocrisy because of what she’s been saying about Donald Trump in going after him for the way he was dishonestly seeking loans,” he noted.
To his credit, Abrams also admitted that while he didn’t initially take the allegations seriously — he just assumed President Donald Trump was just seeking retribution for James’ lawfare against him — he soon changed his mind once he looked into the matter.
“When I first heard that the attorney general had been referred, there was a criminal referral made by the director of the federal Housing and Finance Agency, my initial response was, ‘Oh boy, here we go. Trump is just weaponizing the departments and in this case making a reference to the DOJ, and I’m sure this was all nonsense,’” he said.
“But then I actually read what they were alleging. This is real. This is serious, and I think this could mean big trouble for the attorney general,” he added.
Just for the record, James has disputed the allegations by forwarding alleged proof of her innocence to The New York Times.
“[O]n a separate loan application form provided by the attorney general’s office, Ms. James indicated that she did not intend to occupy the property as a primary residence,” the Times reported Wednesday. “Her mortgage agreement did not require her to do so.”
But Abrams’ guest Dennis Vacco, New York’s former Republican attorney general, noted that it was “not a good look” to respond to the allegations through her office versus through her own personal representation.
“It’s a mistake that she’s using the resources of her office at the moment,” he said. “If she’s going to properly manage this, she’s going to need independent outside counsel.”
Abrams concurred.
“Her legal defenses are interesting, but I do not see how she does not get charged here,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, Abrams then finally aimed some fire at the corporate press over their lackluster reporting regarding this otherwise bombshell scandal.
“I believe the attorney general of New York is going to get charged by the feds here criminally,” he said. “I think this is going to be a big deal. I think it is a case that is being undercovered, even in the right-wing media. I’ve been surprised this hasn’t gotten more attention.”
It’s true that the corporate press has been mostly ignoring the story, but Fox News certainly hasn’t. In fact, Fox News just ran a report Thursday about a New York City estate attorney and expert who claims that this whole case is just as frivolous as James’s lawfare against Trump.
“To be perfectly frank, this is a retaliatory case brought by the president for what the attorney general did to him over the last several years,” attorney Pierre Debbas said. “Both cases, quite honestly, are very weak cases.”
“The attorney general’s case that was brought against Donald Trump was honestly a pure manipulation of the legal system, and it was laughable. Something that’s never taken place in the history of New York that was isolated at one particular person for a politically driven purpose,” he added.
“Now, on the flip side, this serves the same purpose, right? This is the president’s way of seeking retaliation against the attorney general for something that, in reality, is, while it’s considered mortgage fraud, it’s not criminal. And it’s not something that would have been brought upon had the attorney general not pursued a similar case with low merit against the president a few years back,” he concluded.
