DC Residents Allegedly Ignored And Abandoned After Snowstorm

Residents of Washington, D.C., claim their city has not done enough to clear roads from the leftovers of Sunday’s snowstorm, making driving, parking and even walking nearly impossible in portions of the city.

Residents told the Daily Caller on Thursday that their concerns are being ignored. The storm left a recorded 6.9 inches of snow and sleet, according to The Washington Post.

Zach Horton of Spring Valley, located in D.C.’s northwest corner, told the Caller that he had to walk his pregnant wife, Courtney, to the hospital to deliver their baby early Monday morning. (RELATED: Democrat Leadership Warns Lawmakers To Stay Away From Anti-ICE Protests)

He shared that during the trek, he and Courtney climbed down a hill layered with an inch of ice over snow while his wife was in labor.

After eventually making it to the hospital and delivering a healthy baby girl, the Hortons worried about how they would get home and who would take care of their four other children — including one diagnosed with FOXG1 syndrome, a rare genetic condition.

They turned to city officials, calling numbers across any agency even tangentially connected to road service for help. They alleged that many calls were sent straight to voicemail, while some bureaucrats were “completely indifferent.” They added, however, that some of the operators still “sounded gracious.”

When Zach asked a 311 operator about what he and his wife should do about their critical situation, she allegedly replied, “Don’t know, not our problem.”

They also called snow plow companies, which allegedly directed the couple to voicemail messages saying they were closed for a snow day.

Neighbors have offered their services to help out D.C. residents. One neighbor used his truck to take the Horton’s kids to school while another sent over his nanny to watch the children. Yet another neighbor sent their kids to shovel the driveway.

“Good neighbors pitch in when the city doesn’t,” Zach said, noting that one neighbor had to pick up his Courtney and their newborn baby from the hospital in an all-terrain vehicle because the streets were still frozen days later.

He told the Caller that his street still remains unplowed, although some bags of salt were thrown up the street Thursday morning.

One D.C. resident told the Caller he was upset with the city after he witnessed a city-branded truck stopped on the side of the road to exchange the battery of a speed trap.

“The district lost no time ensuring it could keep collecting ticket revenue uninterrupted, but it just didn’t seem to care that much about everyday citizens whose lives were disrupted,” the resident added.

He was not alone. Other residents took to the internet to share their complaints.

“Looks like Parker St NE hasn’t been plowed even once…F these ppl I guess,” one resident shared on a Reddit page for Washington, D.C, Wednesday night. The post featured a photo of a street where the asphalt is not even visible, and cars are snowed in.

The alleged inaction is affecting more than just drivers, with one resident sharing on the same reddit forum that although he’s “all for giving grace” to D.C. Department of Public Works (DCDPW) employees, “some crosswalks and sidewalks are unacceptably dangerous right now.”

The resident posted a photo of a sidewalk covered with a thick layer of footprints in dirtying snow. The picture also shows a wall of snow between the sidewalk and the street, which residents would often need to step over to cross the road.

Another resident shared a photo Wednesday of three National Guardsmen pushing a stuck car out of the snow.

One resident told the Caller that he also needed the help of a member of the armed services to get his car unstuck from the street.

The resident said he spent the weekend with a family member outside of the city, as he had a generator. Upon his return, however, most residential streets were still covered with snow.

He shared how he got stuck in the streets of Eastern Market until a Marine offered to help push him out.

The resident identified the Marine as Jackson Perkins, who had made a video offering to pull out “little-a**” cars across the city.

The resident told the Caller Thursday that he still can’t find a place to park, and he had to stay at a hotel mere blocks from his home, because that was the only parking available. (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: X-Games Legend Says Democrats Left State In Ruins, Endorses GOP Gov Candidate)

“We’re supposed to get another nor’easter this weekend,” the resident added. “So, I’m not sure what I’m gonna do.”

The city of Washington, D.C., did not return the Daily Caller’s request for comments.
