For fans of the hit ‘90s superhero series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, the chemistry between Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher was undeniable.
On-screen, the pair brought Clark Kent and Lois Lane to life with energy, romance, and charisma. But behind the scenes, things weren’t always as harmonious.
Now, nearly three decades after the show ended, Cain is opening up about the dynamic he shared with his co-star — and it confirms years of behind-the-scenes speculation.

During a candid appearance on the Inside of You podcast, Cain, 58, addressed long-standing rumors of friction between him and Hatcher, 60.
While he began by praising her, calling her “the best Lois Lane of all time,” he didn’t shy away from acknowledging that their working relationship had its challenges.
“Sometimes working with her was the greatest thing in the world,” Cain reflected. “Other times, it was a lot more difficult.”

Cain, who played both Superman and his mild-mannered alter ego Clark Kent, recounted his very first impression of Hatcher during the audition process. After being cast, he was told to do a chemistry read with Hatcher, who had a surprisingly confrontational approach.
“She’s in this room and she goes, ‘You don’t like me, do you? We were at the network together. You never talked to me. You didn’t say hi to me,’” Cain recalled. “No other girl had asked me to run lines.”
Cain, surprised by the accusation, replied, “You didn’t say hi to me either. I was just trying to get a job. They never paired us up. I had no reason to talk to you.”
Looking back, Cain recognized that this tension between them mirrored their on-screen characters. “But that right there was the relationship between Lois and Clark,” he said. “Lois drove the series and that was her.”

As the show progressed, Cain said there were times when he and Hatcher didn’t speak — though he was quick to clarify that it wasn’t due to a major falling-out.
“We didn’t have a big [falling-out],” he explained. “There were times when we had great chemistry. During those times, working together was just the easiest thing in the world.”
But there were also moments of frustration. “Other times, I just wanted to finish and go home,” Cain admitted. “I almost feel like she didn’t.”
He elaborated further, expressing that Hatcher’s attention to detail could occasionally delay production.
“There were times where I felt like, ‘I don’t think she wants to go home because she’s worried about this one little thing that has nothing to do with what we’re doing. And that’s slowing us down for two-and-a-half hours,’” he said.

“I’m a team guy. I’m real simple. Plug me in and let’s go. I’m here to get this done as fast as we can.”
Despite these bumps in the road, Cain made it clear that he holds no grudge. Time, it seems, has softened the tension. Nearly 28 years after the show ended, Cain said the two are now “still very friendly.”
He even spoke with admiration for Hatcher’s legacy. “She’s an icon,” he said.
“Overall, it was amazing. Incredible. What a way to start a career, what a way to learn what doing a one-hour series is like.”
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman aired from 1993 to 1997 and was a critical part of the superhero television boom of the decade. It helped launch both Cain and Hatcher into stardom, cementing their places in pop culture.
While fans may be surprised to learn about the on-set difficulties, it’s heartening to know that Cain and Hatcher were able to work through their differences.
In a town where egos often clash and wounds are rarely healed, it’s a refreshing reminder that professional respect — and time — can mend even long-standing tensions.
If only more Hollywood disputes ended this way.
