Defense titan unveils massive helmet upgrade for troops straight from sci-fi

The next generation of combat helmets could be on the horizon for America’s warfighters, blending combat readiness with technology straight out of sci-fi, Anduril Industries revealed Monday.

The new helmet, dubbed EagleEye, uses artificial intelligence and augmented reality technology to give soldiers battlefield data displayed directly in their field of vision while allowing for enhanced communication on the ground and from command, Anduril said Monday. The new helmet design was developed with multiple partners, including Meta and Qualcomm Technologies.

“We don’t want to give service members a new tool—we’re giving them a new teammate,” Anduril founder Palmer Luckey said in a statement. “The idea of an AI partner embedded in your display has been imagined for decades. EagleEye is the first time it’s real.”

The helmet allows soldiers to see a 2-dimensional map of their surroundings directly in their field of vision without obstructing their sight. Additionally, the helmet can help identify friendly forces from hostile forces with an augmented reality overlay.

Soldiers would be able to call for fire support, communicate with drones and other units while staying mobile and forgoing heavy extra equipment. The helmet will also provide the ballistic protection necessary for military headgear, Anduril says.

The company, which was founded in 2017, has made its name pioneering AI technology in defense applications. Currently, EagleEye is being tested and used in the U.S. Army, according to the company.

Luckey is the creator of the Oculus headset, a gaming-focused VR system that helped drive early commercial adoption of virtual-reality technology.

Anduril Industries did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
